Issuance of Notification & Response Levels for Perfluorohexane Sulfonic Acid (PFHxS) in Drinking Wat

This is a message from the State Water Resources Control Board.

ISSUANCE OF NOTIFICATION AND RESPONSE LEVELS FOR PERFLUOROHEXANE SULFONIC ACID (PFHxS) IN DRINKING WATER, UPDATED MONITORING ORDERS

On October 31, 2022, under the authority of the Deputy Director of the State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water (Division), California issued a notification level of 3 parts per trillion (ppt) and a response level of 20 ppt for perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS).

Notification and response levels are nonregulatory, health-based advisory levels established for contaminants in drinking water for which maximum contaminant levels have not been established. Notification and response levels are established as precautionary measures for contaminants that may be considered candidates for establishment of maximum contaminant levels, but have not yet undergone or completed the regulatory standard setting process prescribed for the development of maximum contaminant levels and are not drinking water standards.

For information on notification and response levels, please visit: https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/drinking_water/certlic/drinkingwater/NotificationLevels.html

The Division is also issuing Order DW 2022-0001-DDW, which completely rescinds and replaces Orders DW 2020-0003-DDW and DW-2021-0001-DDW. Order DW 2022-0001-DDW will be posted at https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/drinking_water/certlic/drinkingwater/pfas_ddw_general_order/.

Water systems with sources requiring PFAS monitoring under Order DW 2022-0001-DDW will receive email correspondence from their district office in the first week of November 2022
